BIG Game in South Philly Tonight as Flyers’ Playoff Chances Improve from 9% to 12%

Big one in South Philly on a Tuesday night.

It’s the Philadelphia Flyers (80 points) vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets (85 points) for playoff jockeying in the East. The Flyers have a game in hand on the Jackets, who came to Philly and got a 2-1 shootout win just ten days ago. It seemed like the Flyers’ playoff hopes were dead after that, then they went on a three-game, West Coast road trip in which they swept the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks. Now they’re back in the mix as we hit the home stretch.

This is probably the biggest Flyers game since, well, March 14th I guess. But the stakes are a little higher this time because the Flyers can claw back two points from Columbus while maintaining the game in hand.

At Moneypuck, their playoff odds are now at 12%, so “you’re telling me there’s a chance,” as Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber once famously said. They need to go on a crazy heater down the stretch to get in, which seems improbable, but the reality of the situation is that they’ve won 5 of 6 and took a loser point in the other game. They have the game(s) in hand, they play the Islanders next Friday, and they have three games against Detroit as well, a team sitting on 84 points right now and fighting for a spot of their own.

It’s just really jumbled in there, with several teams to climb over. Maybe they pull off a miracle, maybe not, but at least the Flyers are worth watching in late March. When’s the last time we could say that?

Flyers remaining schedule:

  • vs. Blue Jackets
  • vs. Blackhawks
  • at Red Wings
  • vs. Dallas (back-to-back)
  • at Capitals
  • vs. Red Wings
  • at Islanders (back-to-back)
  • vs. Bruins
  • at Devils
  • at Red Wings
  • at Jets
  • vs. Canes
  • vs. Canadiens (back-to-back)
