I’ve never played in the National Hockey League, but I can’t imagine a much better scenario as a rookie to have your first goal in the league be a game-winner. That’s what happened Sunday afternoon at the Xfinity Mobile Arena as the biggest Flyers game in years was capped off by a game-winner by Porter Martone in overtime against the Boston Bruins.

An absolutely electric call by Jim Jackson there. Over on 97.5 The Fanatic, Tim Saunders had a fantastic call, as well.

Kenny Albert and Brian Boucher were on the national call for TNT:

And here’s the call on 98.5 The Sports Hub on the Bruins Radio Network:

The win puts the Flyers in third place in the Metropolitan Division with five games to go.

Things have gone the Flyers’ way in recent days. The Red Wings, Senators, Blue Jackets, and Islanders all lost in regulation on Saturday. The Red Wings came back from a 4-1 deficit on Sunday to tie the Minnesota Wild before ultimately losing, 5-4, after giving up a goal with less than two minutes left in regulation. You couldn’t write a better script for the Flyers this weekend.

Notwithstanding the help the Flyers are getting on the scoreboard, they’ve been one of the hottest teams in the league recently. They’ve won 14 of their last 20 games. And they’re beating good teams.

The next Flyers game is Tuesday night on the road against the Devils. If they can stay on a roll, we’ll see playoff hockey in Philly for the first time since 2018.
