Big Phillies news ahead of the opener:

“She went in there and asked for a cheesesteak with no meat and they looked at her absolutely crazy.”

So cheese and onions on a roll. There does not appear to be a vegan cheesesteak on the Skinny Joey’s menu.

You can, however, get a vegan cheesesteak elsewhere in the city. According to a 2024 Reddit threat, the top recommendations are:

  • Monk’s cafe seitan cheesesteak
  • Triangle Tavern (10th and Passyunk)
  • Joe’s at Frankford and Girard
  • Pizza plus

Could be a good site post one of these day – “best vegan cheesesteak in Philly?” We’ll contract Taryn Hatcher to do the taste testing.

For real though, seitan is legit. It’s a wheat-based substitute that resembles chicken texture. Cedar Point up in Fishtown made some banging seitan wings back in the day. You should give it a try one of these days if you’ve never had it before. Hail seitan!

(this is a stupid blog post, but I’m testing a theory that Phillies fans will click on anything)
